"Whoever controls this… controls the future."

After years of delays and more industry speculation than most other movies combined, the first trailer for Gore Verbinski's The Lone Ranger finally hit the internet today. Aaaaaaand… it looks cool! This initial look at the film reveals little other than the villain's obsession with trains (understandable) and Armie Hammer and Johnny Depp, as The Lone Ranger and Tonto, looking pretty cool and doing action stuff, but since it's a Verbinski joint, it's very awesome action stuff. The sense of humor we've come to expect from Johnny Depp in this kind of material seems either missing or placed on the backburner for now, in a possible attempt to prove to contemporary audiences that westerns can be badass without the benefit of humor, satire or parody. Or who knows? Maybe Depp's playing it completely straight this time.

Another unexpected moment in the trailer? "Academy Award-Winning Director Gore Verbinski." Sure, he only won last year, and pretty much deserved to for Rango, but a few years ago that's something we never thought we'd see in a trailer. Good for you, Gore!

The Lone Ranger, starring Armie Hammer, Johnny Depp, Tom Wilkinson, Ruth Wilson, William Fichtner, Barry Pepper, James Badge Dale and Helena Bonham Carter, hits theaters everywhere on July 3, 2013.
