United fought their way out of an embarrassing defeat against CFR Cluj whilst Chelsea had a much more convincing victory against Nordsjaelland in the second week of the Champions League.
Things got off to a bad start for United at Cluj's Transylvanian stadium, as Kapetanos took advantage of dodgy defending from the red devils to make good of Sougou's cross, putting the ball past De Gea to give them the lead.
But United, fresh off of a defeat to Tottenham in the Premier League which also saw them conceding early, wasn't about to let that happen again, as Rooney's free kick found Van Persie, who inadvertently nudged it way over keeper Felgueiras to even the score.
The pair linked up again after the break from another Rooney free-kick, with Van Persie volleying home the winning goal, dashing Cluj's hopes of a dramatic upset and leaving the final score 1-2.
Meanwhile, Chelsea pulled off a much more spectacular victory against the Danish club Nordsjaelland, after a dull first-half performance enlivened only by Mata's goal in the 33rd minute.
The second half was much more impressive from Chelsea, after David Silva scored from a free-kick in the 79th minute and successfully opened the floodgates, with Mata adding one more to his tally three minutes later and Ramires ending the punishment just before the final whistle with a fourth.
