Gina Carano Cast in The Female Expendables

The star of Haywire and Fast Six is the first to sign up for the all-star action movie with an entirely female cast.

The Female Expendables (which desperately needs a title by now) is clearly on the fast track. The gender-swapped version of the Sylvester Stallone franchise, which thus far has ignored all the leading ladies of the action genre, was barely announced a month ago and already has its first star: Gina Carano, the MMA fighter-turned-actor who starred in Steven Soderbergh's Haywire earlier this year, and who will co-star in Fast Six in 2013.

The film's producer, Adi Shankar, was particularly descriptive in explaining the casting decision to Variety: "I don't know how I'm supposed to make a movie that is supposed to be the female version of The Expendables without Gina Carano in it. It would be like making Twix without caramel or Jamba Juice without jamba."

Carano has made a big splash in the action community after her debut role in Haywire, but the fact that she's considered action royalty already seems to shoot holes in the theories of Michelle Rodriguez, who recently denied the possibility of joining the Female Expendables because she'd only made ten action movies so far. Will Carano's involvement encourage her to join the show? We sure as hell hope so. Either way, we're happy to see Carano on board. Now that a Soderbergh alumni has come aboard, more action superstars seem very likely to follow.

CraveOnline will be back with more Female Expendables news because we're going to Barcelona.
