When thinking of a name for this column, the first words that came to mind were 'small guys.' But after thinking more about it, these guys really aren't small. What I'm referring to are the players that aren't owned in many leagues but have been putting up great numbers as of late. If you're in a head-to-head league and you have playoffs looming, be sure to grab some of these guys to fill your playoff roster and thank me later.
Percentages are based on Yahoo leagues
Donovan Solano, 2B/3B/SS/OF – Mia
If you had a stud like Emilio Bonifacio, Solano is a decent fill-in. He's hardly owned, can play almost any position and is batting .432 in the past two weeks with a stolen base to boot.
Eric Young, 2B/OF – Col
What if I told you that Young was the 5th best second baseman in all of baseball for the month of August? It's true. He tore up a line of 3/8/.406 before landing on the DL. All signs are pointing to a very healthy Young soon, so if he's available in your league and you have room on your roster, swoop him up fast. The kid hits in happy friendly Colorado for heaven's sake.
Pedro Ciriaco, 2B/3B/SS – Bos
He's now starting permanently and has hit 2/7/.342 with 2 steals in the past month, placing him in the top 14 of all the positions he plays during that span (2B/3B/SS).
Kyle Kendrick, SP – Phi
The guy has been a top 25 pitcher in the past month, posting an ERA of 2.95, a WHIP of 1.01, 4 wins and a strikeout/walk ratio of 25/6. At first glance he just looks like another flukey 28-year-old that's on a hot stretch; but then you see the Phillies' friendly schedule in September in which they face Colorado, Houston, Miami (twice) and the Mets and ya gotta buy. I'm all in.
Jhoulys Chacin, SP – Col
He's been hurt almost the entire season but is coming off a career year in 2011. In his first two starts back he's only allowed 2 runs over 11 innings. What do you have to lose?
Javier Lopez, RP – SF
If you're looking for some extra saves, Lopez has been getting all the latest chances in San Fran. And if your league counts holds, add an extra star to Lopez's Book-It pin (yes, that was a 90's Pizza Hut reference). He has 4 saves and 2 holds in the last week and a half.
Carlos Gomez, OF -Mil
The kid is hot right now. 5 home runs and 8 stolen bases in the last month while carrying a decent average makes him a must-add.
Josh Rutledge, SS- Col
How is he still available in so many leagues?! The kid has been crushing it. Literally, he's been the 6th best shortstop in all of fantasy in the past month, hitting 4/16/.325 with 2 steals. Even when Troy Tulowitzki returns from the DL, the Rockies will find a way to get him in the lineup.
Mitch Moreland, OF/1B- Tex
It looks like Mitch has finally found his stroke. In the past month he's been raking, hitting 5 homers with a ridiculous 20 RBIs and a .341 average.
Norichika Aoki, OF – Mil
Need more stolen base help? Aoki has 8 in the past month and is getting on base, hitting .304
Tyler Colvin, 1B/OF – Col
Looks like it's time to recognize that Colvin is for real and not the bust he was in Chicago. He's on another hot streak, hitting 2/10/.333 with 2 triples and 3 doubles in the past two weeks.
Hisashi Iwakuma SP – Sea
This is not the Mariners we are used to seeing. They get rid of Ichiro and they get better. Crazy weird. Iwakuma has been carrying on the tradition of great Japanese play since his departure though, throwing a 2.05 ERA in the last month.
