Preview: AFL Round 22 Winners and Losers

Previewing all the round 22 action.

Richmond ($1.62) v Essendon ($2.35)

Yes, Essendon are down in the dumps, Yes, they were smashed by… Carlton 156-60 last Saturday, but this team, although unlikely they finish in the eight, remain capable of big things. I’d be more willing to say they could win had Patty Ryder not gone down with yet another injury, but they’re still a good chance. Then again, names like Scott Gumbleton and Mark Baguley beg to differ.

Tigers IN: Astbury,Batchelor, Dea OUT: King, Griffiths,Ellis

Bombers IN: Lovett-Murray, Gumbleton, Pears, O’Brien, Baguley OUT: Lonergan, Ryder, Lee, Carlisle, Fletcher

Pick: Richmond.

St Kilda($1.00) v GWS ($31.00)

Some HUGE outs for the Saints: Fisher, Armitage, Gram, Schneider (to an extent Koschitzke, but he’s been the league’s worst player for about a month now) are all big parts of what they do. Is it enough for GWS to get over the top? Probably not, but a betting man may say otherwise.

Saints IN: Milera, Newnes, Siposs, Ross, Ledger OUT: Koschitzke, Gram, Schneider, Fisher, Armitage

Giants IN: Palmer, Ward, Treloar, Bugg, Tomlinson, Wilson, Cooyou OUT: Clifton, Scully, Miles, Buntine, Golds, Edwards, Folau

Pick: Saints

Port Adelaide ($2.30) v Brisbane ($1.65)

The only people watching this game will be those folks in their respective cities. Kudos to the Lions, their 10-point win over Adelaide after a shocking first quarter was impressive.

Port IN: Logan, Boak OUT: D Stewart, Moore

Lions IN: Drummond, Hawksley OUT: Maguire, Yeo

Pick: Brisbane

Sydney ($2.03)v Hawthorn ($1.02)

One plays two in a possible Grand Final preview. The Swans are a game clear and both sides are coming off big wins- their average victory margin in round 21 was 73 points. Hawthorn’s big ins means the squad is almost at 100 percent, but both sides are that close it’s a tough one to call.

Swans unchanged

Hawks IN: Mitchell, Franklin, Gibson OUT: Bateman, Gilham, Savage

Pick: Sydney

Gold Coast ($17.00) v Carlton ($1.01)

If Carlton wins and Fremantle goes down as expected they’re in the 8. This is the same club that was dead in the water a month ago. Gold Coast’s season is almost a wrap, but it’s possible they’ll go out with a bang.

Suns IN: Dixon, McKenzie, Gillbee OUT: Brennan, McQualter, Toy

Blues IN: Ellard OUT: Robinson

Pick: Carlton

West Coast ($1.75) v Collingwood ($2.10)

Collingwood’s effort against North last weekend was not what we’ve come to expect. I’m also not sure their big ins outweigh some of the tough losses that will sit this week out. West Coast on the other hand dominated Port a week after that cheeky win against the Cats. The game being played in Perth probably swings it in the Eagles’ favour.

Eagles IN: Butler, Kennedy, Rosa OUT: Hams, Dalziell, Brennan

Pies IN: Johnson, Swan, Wood, Toovey, Goldsack OUT: Jolly, Maxwell, Clarke, Elliott, Mooney

Pick: West Coast

Geelong ($1.01) v Western Bulldogs ($17.00)

Tired of writing about the Bulldogs, they’re tanking.

Cats IN: Varcoe, Christensen, Guthrie, Smedts OUT: Selwood

Dogs IN: Grant, Jones, Howard, Campbell, Talia OUT: Cordy, Roberts

Pick: Geelong

North Melbourne ($1.41) v Fremantle ($3.00)

Fremantle needs to win, their finals hope depend on it. They were excellent last weekend against the Tigers, combing a shutdown defence with a respectable attack. Despite that, North were amazing in toppling the Mapgies on the big Saturday night stage.

Roos IN: Sierakowski, Mullett, C Delaney OUT: none as yet

Freo IN: Roberton, Clarke, Sutcliffe OUT: none as yet

Pick: North

Melbourne ($6.50) v Adelaide ($1.12)

Adelaide, Adelaide, Adelaide

Demons IN: Bate, Gysberts, Nicholson OUT: none as yet

Crowd IN: Porplyzia, Lynch, Riley, Smith, Lyons OUT: Knights, Sloane

Pick: Adelaide.
