Ciarán Hinds is heading back to HBO after his memorable stint as Julius Caesar on “Rome.”

Entertainment Weekly is reporting that Hinds has signed on for “Game of Thrones” season 3 to play Mance Rayder, the self-proclaimed King Beyond the Wall. Rayder was mentioned several times during the second season of the series as he amassed an army of Wildings to march against the kingdoms of Westros.

During the closing moments of season two, Jon Snow (Kit Harington) was brought to Rayder’s camp after convincing his captors that he had turned on the Night’s Watch.

Hinds is an accomplished actor with dozens of film and TV projects to his credit, including Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, John Carter, Munich, There Will Be Blood, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2 and The Debt. More recently, Hinds appeared on USA’s “Political Animals” miniseries.

At Comic-Con, “Game of Thrones” creator George R.R. Martin and HBO revealed several new cast members for the third season, including Diana Rigg, Clive Russell, Kerry Ingram, Tara Fitzgerald and Tobias Menzies; who previously co-starred in “Rome” opposite Hinds.

“Game of Thrones” season 3 will debut in spring 2013 on HBO.
