An Early Look At The AFL Trade Season

Who's approaching free agency and which clubs want them?

We haven’t even finished the home and away season yet are looking at possible trade scenarios for the upcoming offseason. Here are some of the important ones.

Adelaide club legend Mark Ricciuto said in an interview earlier this week that big forward Kurt Tippett wants out and will field free agency offers from other clubs. Tippett has since linked to Brisbane and Gold Coast, but it would be hasty to rule out Fremantle. Brisbane may be looking for a replacement to the aging Jonathon Brown while it is known that Fremantle have pursued another forward of similar ilk in Travis Cloke earlier this season and they have money to spend.

Travis Cloke is still said to have a number of suitors. The AFL website linked him to Carlton, among others, even though his stock looks to have dramatically fallen due to a very poor season.

Cloke isn’t the only worry for Collingwood. They also have a number of other guys that are soon to be out of contract, including Dayne Beams, Sharrod Wellingham, Ben Reid and Harry O'Brien. Beams is the priority, he’s been among the league’s elite in 2012, but each of those guys plays a vital role for the Magpies. Also, Darren Jolly can’t be far from retirement and their backups aren’t too pretty.

It looks as if Fremantle has money to spend and a couple of Saints could be their target. While Brendan Goddard has given indication he’s not likely to leave St Kilda, Leigh Montagna may. Both of those guys are look to have lost a bit this season and it may be wiser to look elsewhere. That is also why the name Sharrod Wellingham doesn’t have us enthused. The Dockers need pace in the midfield, but they also want a forward- they struck out on Mitch Clarke last season and have apparently gone hard at Cloke with a $1 million deal.

Travis Boak is high on a lot of clubs’ wish lists and as long as Port Adelaide continues to dwell at the bottom of the league’s standings he’ll always be a chance to leave. Geelong are very interested; not too long ago they sent coach Scott, Joel Selwood and Jimmy Bartel across to Adelaide to try convince him. North Melbourne are also keen.
