After 18-year-old Team GB diver Tom Daley failed to win an Olympic medal in the synchronised 10m platform event, many were disappointed considering how Daley was pinned as one of Great Britain's brightest young athletes.
However, none expressed their disappointment as viscerally as Twitter user 'Rileey69', who decided that it would be appropriate to leave Daley a variety of abusive messages, including "You let your dad down i hope you know that", in reference to Daley dedicating his pursuit of an Olympic medal to his late father, who died last year after a long battle with cancer.
Other messages Rileey69 left for the Olympian included "i’m going to find you and i’m going to drown you in the pool you cocky twat your a nobody people like you make me sick,” "you should be ashamed of yourself you let our country down just fuck off" and "hope your crying now you should be why can’t you even produce for your country your just a diver anyway a over hyped prick".
Daley retweeted Rileey69's comments with the message: "'After giving it my all… you get idiots sending me this…". Rileey69 quickly began trending and, after receiving a fair share of hate-filled comments himself, decided to apologise to Daley, tweeting: "I'm sorry mate i just wanted you to win cause its the olympics I'm just annoyed we didn't win I'm sorry tom accept my apology." After Daley failed to respond, Rileey69 added: "please i don't want to be hated I'm just sorry you didn't win i was rooting for you pal to do britain all proud just so upset."
A petition was released to get him banned from Twitter, which was signed by more than 3,500 people, and his account was suspended. Police investigated into the matter and found him to be living in Weymouth, Dorset. A statement was later released stating that Dorset police had arrested the 17-year-old in a guest house in the area.
