Just in advance of Comic Con 2012 comes the first teaser trailer for Jose Padilha's remake of the sci-fi classic Robocop, and while it doesn't quite have the satiric sting of Paul Verhoeven's original film, the dryly ominous tone of this commercial for OmniCorp does at least evoke the franchise's trademark cynicism. Imagining a world in which American cities are "defended" by aerial drones and robots equipped with Hellfire missiles does indeed seem fitting for the dystopian future the Robocop movies have always shown us (with the exception of Robocop 3, but then that's the exception to everything, isn't it). The footage comes via Entertainment Weekly, but now you can also visit the "official" OmniCorp website, which has little in the way of content thus far but might be worth bookmarking for future developments from MGM and Sony.

Robocop, starring Joel Kinnaman, Abbie Cornish, Gary Oldman, Samuel L. Jackson and Hugh Laurie, is scheduled to be released on August 9, 2012.
