Reigning Tour De France champion, Cadel Evans, avoided a major crash for the second time in a matter of days at during Stage 4 yesterday.
A host of riders, including Great Britain’s Mark Cavendish, fell hard just 2.5 kilometres from end of the Stage 4 Abbeville/Rouen finish line.
Bernard Eisel (Team Sky) caused the crash when his wheel collided with the wheel of the rider in front.
Crashes marred Stage 2 of the Tour also.
Germany’s Andre Greipel claimed the 214km stage as a heap of riders collected themselves not far behind him.
Evans and just one other member of the BMC team avoided being caught up in the pileup as the Australian finished 27th, good for seventh overall, 17 seconds behind Fabian Cancellara of RNT.
