Motocross racing star Ryan Dungey is leading The MN Major River-to-River Ride, a charity ride in his home state of Minnesota benefitting St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
On July 15th in Dungey will lead two bike rides – 62-mile and 25-mile events – starting at The Bielenberg Sports Center in Woodbury, Minn. and rolling through the St. Croix and Mississippi River valleys. Local residents are invited to participate with all proceeds from the registration fees going to St. Jude’s.
Dungey is teaming with Target as a sponsor for the event. He’ll lead the two charity rides the day after he competes at Spring Creek in Millville, Minn. as part of the Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship.
As he preps for the big charity ride, Dungey took a few minutes aside to check in with Crave Online what brought him to helping St. Jude’s and where he sees this event going in the future.
CRAVEONLINE: How did you get involved with St. Jude?
Ryan Dungey: I got involved with St. Jude’s through Target, who has been a supporter of the hospital for many years. Target helped create and is hosting “The MN Major “charity bike ride with me to raise money for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
My grandmother battled cancer for many years before eventually losing the fight, and it has been a goal of mine to help and support others that are fighting cancer for the hardships they endure. The charity ride will benefit St. Jude’s and the work they do.
CRAVEONLINE: Were you able to interact with St. Jude patients during the planning of the ride?
Ryan Dungey: Yes, I was very fortunate and grateful to meet the patients who were there undergoing treatment. To be able to spend time with them and to see what they face every day really makes everything else in life seem so small. We got to spend time having fun, playing outside and evening singing karaoke. That was the best part – to see them with a smile and let go of everything for a moment.
CRAVEONLINE: How much input did you have in planning and building up this charity event?
Ryan Dungey: It was great to have a chance to be part of the planning for the ride. From the initial concept, I wanted it to be a cycling event because I spend so many hours training on my road bike, but also being sure that it’s a ride that anyone with a bike could come out and enjoy on a beautiful day for a great cause.
Without the help of the whole crew at Target though this would not be possible, they made this idea become a reality. I’m so glad there are many people who want to help and that are behind this supporting it all the way.
CRAVEONLINE: Have you ridden with big groups like this before? Fans, etc.?
Ryan Dungey: This will be my first time riding in a big group, so I look forward to being able to experience that and to hang out with everybody as well.
CRAVEONLINE: Do you see yourself staying involved with St. Jude's in the future?
Ryan Dungey: Yes I would like to make this an annual event to help St. Jude’s and make a difference for years to come.
