In a surprise announcement during last night’s Nintendo Direct Broadcast, Nintendo revealed that Namco Bandai in collaboration with Kid Icarus: Uprising developer, Sora, will be handling development duties on Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and the 3DS. Smash Bros. creator Masahiro Sakurai will still be heading up the project.

Additionally, Tetsuya Akatsuka (art and sound director on SoulCalibur) and the main team behind the Tekken series will be working on Smash Bros. too. But that’s not all! Director Yoshito Higuchi (Tales of Vesperia) and Producer Kenya Kobayashi (Ridge Racer) will be involved as well. But to what capacity, we don’t know yet.

That’s a lot of people from an eclectic mix of properties working on Nintendo’s new brawler. Here’s hoping it doesn’t turn into a case of too many hands in the pot, which is surely looks like. Prove us wrong, Nintendo!

We’ll be back with more information on Super Smash Bros. Wii U when it becomes available.
