First Trailer for Dredd 3D

Judge Dredd returns in a movie that looks pretty good this time... because it's got the same plot as The Raid: Redemption.

"Momma is not the law. "I" am the law."

Judge Dredd, the iconic 2000 A.D. comic book character – whoa, we never realized that 2000 A.D. put the "A.D." in the wrong place before (look it up) – who protected the futuristic Mega-City One as judge, jury and executioner, might finally have a good movie to call his own. After the debacle of 1995's Sylester Stallone movie, director Pete Travis (Vantage Point) appears to have dropped the budget, raised the stakes, and made… a sci-fi version of The Raid: Redemption?!

Yes, the first trailer for Dredd premiered this morning at Machinima, and it turns out that the plot revolves around Judge Dredd (Karl Urban) and a rookie (Olivia Thirlby) fighting their way up a high-rise full of thugs to take down a crime lord, played by "Game of Thrones" star Lena Headey. This specifics are a little different – the building is hundreds of stories tall, Headey is dealing a drug that slows down time somehow – but the basic premise is the same as the international action sensation from director Gareth Evans, about a squad of (and soon only a few) Indonesian police officers trapped in a tall building full of violent criminals who want to kill them, whose only way out is up. The Raid: Redemption already has an American remake on the way, ironically enough.

We're not crying "foul." Dredd has been in development for a long time and it's probably just a coincidence, but be honest… it's weird-ass coincidence, isn't it? Oh well, at least Dredd doesn't look bad. The trailer's got a gritty, modestly-budgeted sci-fi appeal that makes us very interested in giving it a gander. What about you?
