Near the end of "Fringe" season 4, the episode "Letters of Transit" jumped ahead to the year 2036 and depicted a future in which the Observers had taken over the world while the Fringe team of Dr. Walter Bishop (John Noble), Astrid Farnsworth (Jasika Nicole) and Peter Bishop (Joshua Jackson) were trapped in amber for two decades.
When "Fringe" returns to Fox for its fifth and final season, the story will rejoin the team in 2036, according to John Noble.
While speaking with TVLine, Noble said “As far as I know, we’re just jumping ahead [to 2036].” Noble even went so far as to partially spoil the fate of Olivia Dunham (Anna Torv), who was notably missing from "Letters of Transit."
“Walter, Olivia, Astrid and Peter are insurgents, so we know all the dirty tricks that have been played against us," related Noble. "We’ll be learning from the past,” added Noble, while indicating that there will be references to what happened to the Fringe team before they were ambered and "found footage" of the events that led to the Observers' rise to power.
Noble also appeared to confirm that Georgina Haig will reprise her role as Olivia and Peter's grown daughter, Etta when he teased “a wonderful reunion of mother and daughter.” Noble didn't mention if Simon (Henry Ian Cusick) would also be back, but given Cusick's recent release from "Scandal," it is not outside the realm of possibility.
Finally, Noble shared some thoughts on the trajectory of Walter's character arc over the course of the series.
“Walter is the man who started this, so there has to be resolution," noted Noble. "There has to be redemption. We also have to see the final maturing of the relationship between Peter and Olivia, because it has been so difficult for them and we want them so much to be with each other… I would love to see the Peter/Walter relationship come back to where it was.”
The fifth season of "Fringe" will premiere on Friday, September 28.
