Lehigh Falls To Xavier In The South

The upset-ridden South Region finally as a game go the right way, but more upsets loom in the distance.

Lehigh over Duke might have been the most entertaining NCAA upset in a while, but the Mountain Hawks could not handle the lights out performance from tournament regulars Xavier.

Xavier fell victim to a Lehigh run early in the game, setting themselves up to be down 35-20 with just 3:16 left in the first half.  The Mountain Hawks were looking strong on 53 percent shooting and 14 first-half points from Mackey McKnight.  But Xavier wanted nothing to do with being on the losing side of cinderella run.  The Musketeers clawed their way back, going on a 15-4 run to bring themselves down by just 37-33 at the half.

When the second 20 minutes of the game started it was all Xavier the rest of the way.  Lehigh pulled back midway through, tieing the score up at 52-52, but Tu Holloway and Kenny Frease made it known that Xavier was tasting sweet this year.  Holloway scored 15 of his 21 points in the second half, and Frease scored a career-high 25 points to go with 12 rebounds.  It was fun to see Lehigh upset Duke, but if we're all honest with ourselves, watching Xavier take on Baylor will be a game with a much less predictable outcome.

#15 Lehigh 58

#10 Xavier 70

Other scores in the South Region from the weekend:

#12 VCU 61

#4 Indiana 63

#8 Iowa State 71

#1 Kentucky 87

#11 Colorado  63

#3 Baylor  80

Looking to next weekend:

Look for #1 Kentucky to see their first tough competition against #4 Indiana.  The Hoosiers are looking strong so far and Kentucky has a tendency to hit dry spells.

Also, #3 Baylor is strong but #10 Xavier is on a roll and getting hot at the right time.  Don't be surprised if the South Region provides an absence of a #1 seed in the Final Four.
