No Rest for the Nerdy – Vol. 54

Gearing up for the PS Vita's launch.

We never stop playing video games. That’s a fact. Even after we call it quits for the week we still look forward to getting home and continuing our digital conquests. It’s our life blood. So we thought it would be fun to share with everyone what our gaming intentions are for the weekend so you guys can get a sense of what we're playing and enjoying on a weekly, non-formal basis. Yes, this concept isn't new to the internet. But hey, we kind of want to join in on the fun. Can you blame us for that? So without further ado, here’s what we’re playing this weekend that will forfeit any semblance of rest…

Feel free to sound off below to let us know what your gaming plans are this weekend.

mikeMike White (@theWhitestMike): In a surprise turn of events, I’m logging into Rift again. I had plenty of subscription time leftover and was curious about patch 1.7, the whole ‘marriage’ thing and finishing up Ember Isles. Two days back, after a few months of absence, and not only have I found a new guild, but tagged along for a full Greenscale’s Blight and River of Souls clear. I’m out of my comfort zone filling in as a raid healer, but picking up on it quickly. The aesthetics of Rift are ever pleasing, especially coming off long stretches of SWTOR and WoW. I really have to hand it to the guys and gals over at Trion for not only creating picturesque zones, but varied NPC models between each of them.

On the docket as always is getting back into Tribes: Ascend. There’s been a good number of changes to the way classes and loadouts work on the beta. I’ll openly admit that I’m not quite used to the fast paced action of Tribes, coupled with the need for serious accuracy. Console shooters will not prepare you for this game. I love it.

There was also a demo that recently released for some Xbox game Joey has a boner for. I had to clear out some old save files and XBLA games to download it. In case you haven’t heard of the previous two, Mass Effect 3 is supposedly a “big deal.” In all seriousness, I’m really excited for the multiplayer aspect of the new game.

alexAlex Keen (@dbldn): Recently, I have been blasting through my backlog like there is no tomorrow. Before it was Super Mario Galaxy 2 and Mass Effect 2. Now I’m digging into Half-Life 2: Episode One, which I will easily wrap up this weekend. This game holds up very well and still creeps the shit out of me late at night. I’m not sure if I will jump into Episode Two immediately or if I will need a break.

My time with Tiny Tower has almost come to an end. I promised myself that this silly skyscraper sim would wrap up when I made my 50th floor. I’m stuck on floor 49 and I still stand by this decision. It’s definitely a great game at the start, but as the floors pile up the joy whithers away.  What is left behind is an endless cycle of micro-management. Gross.

Finally, I am still working my way through the Hero’s Quest table in Pinball FX2. My first impression of the table was that adding an RPG element to pinball was genius. Too bad that Zen Studios didn’t dig very deep into the RPG elements. I was hoping for Puzzle Quest-type depth, but this is really just some basic levelling up. It’s truly a missed opportunity that someone should pick up and work on.

erikErik Norris (@Regular_Erik): Like a bear, I’m going into gaming hibernation this weekend to prepare for the launch of the PlayStation Vita next week. I wasn’t all too interested in the device, say, two months ago, but now that it’s nearly upon us, I plan to pick one up on launch day in preparation for my upcoming va-cay to Las Vegas.

The other reason I’m kind of stepping away from games this weekend is because I don’t have anything sitting on my desk demanding to be reviewed. I just published my quick thoughts on Twisted Metal, and I’m going to leave it at that. I might end up playing that game once or twice this weekend to try and kick some ass online, but otherwise, it’s going to be a light gaming weekend. Maybe I’ll actually get outside and feel the sun on my pasty white skin. A man can dream…

paulPaul Tamburro (@PaulTamburro): I’ve recently made my startling return to the pitch on FIFA 12. While my FIFA skills are slightly above average, they are dwarfed by those of the friends that I play with, meaning that over the course of this week I have had my arse handed back to me on a plate via a series of humiliating losses.

Unfortunately, I don’t handle losing very well – I suffer with an illness common among British men called ‘FIFA rage’, which means that I cannot accept defeat graciously. Instead I hurl a barrage of vaguely homoerotic insults at them, such as the classic “suck my d***!”, whilst gnawing at the controller as if wishing to cause my Xbox 360 pain. However, my case of FIFA rage is relatively subdued when compared to that of one of my friends, who once lost a game on FIFA 10 and then proceeded to take the game disk into his garage and destroy it with a hammer.

Along with raising my blood pressure on FIFA, I shall also be playing Portal 2 co-op, as my friend has just retrieved his long lost copy from his ex-girlfriend and shall be joining me on the ride. I have already played through a couple of the opening levels but didn’t get very far. Note: Portal 2 is not best experienced when drunk.

joeyJoey Davidson (@JoeyDavidson): I’m not even going to try and pretend that I’m playing anything other than my PS Vita this weekend. I’ve been pouring over the device since the start of this week, and have found myself steeped in portable gaming goodness at a constant clip.

Which games will I be playing? I finished Uncharted, so that’s out of the way. I’m currently working on WipEout 2048, Touch My Katamari, Lumines and Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3. Each game, so far, has been pretty fun. This system definitely boasts one of the best launch lineups I’ve seen in a while, so kudos to Sony and the third party publishers that have been supporting the device so far.

If I get time to play anything else, which probably won’t happen, I’ll look to venture into either the Mass Effect 3 demo or Gotham City Impostors. I have the ME3 demo, but I personally haven’t played it yet. Erik came over and played it while I watched…it was super nerdy.
