"The Last Resort" has found its second-in-command.

TVLine is reporting that Scott Speedman has signed on for a leading role in the Shawn Ryan ("The Shield") and Karl Gajdusek ("Dead Like Me") drama pilot, "The Last Resort." The potential series takes place in the near future, as the crew of the submarine, the U.S.S. Nevada refuses to fire its nuclear payload, making them into hunted fugitives until they retreat to the island of Sainte Marina and announce the creation of their own breakaway nation.

Speedman will portray Xo Sam Kendal, an officer described as "the beating heart of the boat" who serves directly under his commanding officer, Captain Marcus Chaplin, who will be played by Andre Braugher. Speedman's character is also said to be conflicted about leaving his wife behind on the mainland.

Although Speedman is best known for his appearances in the first two "Underworld" films, his first breakout role on TV was on the WB's "Felicity." Speedman has also starred in "The Strangers," "xXx: State of the Union," "The Moth Diaries" and the recently released film, "The Vow."

Other recent additions to "The Last Resort" pilot include Daisy Betts ("Persons Unknown") and French actress Camille de Pazzis. Betts will portray Grace Shepard, "a gutsy lieutenant" on the Nevada and de Pazzis will play Sophie, a scientist working at the NATO station on Sainte Marina who is surprised when the crew of the Nevada takes over the island.

"The Last Resort" is one of ABC's top projects during the current pilot season and it appears to be a strong contender for a series pickup in the fall.
