In case you hadn't heard, yes, there's a sci-fi version of Zorro in the works, titled Zorro Reborn. The film takes place the future, and features the original Zed Word in quest for revenge. We didn't know much more than that until Variety broke the story that the adaptation has finally found its star: Gael Garcia Bernal, the suave young star of Y Tu Mama Tambien and The Motorcycle Diaries.
Garcia Bernal is reportedly in talks for the film, written by Fracture's Glenn Gerrs as well as Lee Shipman and Brian McGreevy, the latter to also collaborated on the upcoming Dracula movie Harker, which reimagines the original story from the point of view of the formerly hapless hero, now recast as a Scotland Yard Detective. Gael Garcia Bernal usually gravitates towards smaller independent films, making Zorro Reborn an interesting career move. Are you going Hollywood on us, Gael?
The concept of "Zorro in the Future" hasn't been explored in motion pictures before, but it has been turned into a television series called Zorro: Generation Z, which has never aired in the United States but did play in the UK. We haven't seen it, but according to this clip the Zorro of the future can't keep his motorcycle balanced, kicks amputees in the head and hides paint bombs in the Kingpin's trash bags.
Zorro Reborn has nothing to do with this series. Oh thank god.
CraveOnline will be back with more Zorro Reborn news after we forget that The Legend of Zorro ever happened.
