Last fall, The CW and ABC committed to dueling "Beauty and the Beast" projects, with ABC's take inspired by the famous fairy tale and The CW's based upon the '80s series of the same name. And while both networks are actively producing pilots for their respective projects, The CW has already found its Belle… or its Catherine, to be more accurate.

TVLine is reporting that former "Smallville" star Kristin Kreuk will play the female lead in The CW's "Beauty and the Beast" revival. In the original CBS series, Linda Hamilton played Catherine, a New York Assistant District Attorney who was drawn to Vincent (Ron Perlman), a seemingly half-beast/half-man who strove to protect a colony of outcasts living in a subterranean sanctuary.

The new incarnation of the series will re-envision Catherine as a NYPD homicide detective who witnessed her mother's murder years ago shortly before the killer was killed himself by a "Beast." In the present day, Catherine tracks down the so-called "Beast" and learns that he is Vincent Koslow, a survivor of a military experiment gone wrong who now acts as a secret protector of the city and its people.

Kreuk is best known for playing Lana Lang for seven seasons on "Smallville" before returning briefly in the eighth season to wrap up Lana's storyline. Kreuk has also starred in the film "Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li," and made appearances in "Eurotrip," "Chuck" in addition to her starring role on the Canadian drama Edgemont.

The CW's "Beauty and the Beast" has a pilot script by Jennifer Levin and Sherri Cooper, both of whom are executive producing the project alongside the creator of the CBS series, Ron Koslow. Gary Fleder is directing the pilot episode and executive producing the ABC incarnation of "Beauty and the Beast," which reportedly also sought out Kreuk for a leading role.

The role of Vincent has yet to be cast, but an announcement should be made soon.
