Billy Connolly Added to ‘The Hobbit’ Cast

Yes, they're still casting The Hobbit. Yes, it's still awesome.

You know, most movies have their casts more-or-less figured out by the time they start production. Things work very differently in Peter Jackson Land. Production's been going on for many months now, and the first Hobbit movie is scheduled to come out by the end of the year, and he's still adding folks to the cast. This week, we've learned from Variety that Billy Connolly has just been added to the fold as Dain Ironfoot, a dwarven king who arrives just in time to fight the epic Battle of Five Armies at the end of the prequel.

Billy Connolly may have earned his fame as a comedian, but for whatever reason, in films he tends to be more memorable in dramatic roles, like the ass-kicking assassin in Boondock Saints or the tormented priest in The X-Files: I Want to Believe. He also claims to be the only person ever to die in a Muppet movie, having played the ill-fated Billy Bones in Muppet Treasure Island. He's also an accomplished banjo player, although we suspect he'll be doing little of that in the Hobbit movies.

CraveOnline will be back with more Hobbit casting news in November, when Peter Jackson decides to recast Bilbo as Simon Pegg or something.
