The Blue Devils beat Virginia Tech 75 to 60 in a game that was a lot closer than the final score. Duke and Tech were neck and neck with Duke only having a 21 to 20 lead with just a few minutes left in the first half, but that’s when the Blue Devils started to pull away. By the time it was half-time, Duke rapidly piled up a 12 point lead and never looked back.
Duke was lead by freshman guard Austin Rivers who demonstrated why he was one of the top recruits out of last years graduating class. We can almost forgive his horrendous rapping video that circulated YouTube now that we’ve seen he’s the real deal in college. On second thought … nope, we can’t forgive that one just yet. If you haven’t seen this video it’s a reminder why Duke is not known for rappers. Rivers went off for 18 points in the game and made his famous NBA father Doc Rivers proud. Kelly also went for 15 for the Blue Devils who shot 44% from 3-point land and 47% from the field.
The only real moment of controversy in the game came when Duke’s Dawkins got drilled with a technical foul for taunting Tech following his first-half 3-pointer. It was a suspect call, but I for one always like it when the refs act early and keep the game under control with that stuff.
This was Virginia Techs 7th loss in 8 games giving them a 12-10 overall record and a pathetic 1-6 in the ACC. Tech is a lot better team than their record demonstrates, but they still remain incapable of getting over the hump and in the ACC is no place to be if you’re struggling with clutch shooting and chemistry. Tech was lead by Davila who had 16 points and 7 rebounds, but are going to lead some more upper-classman to start delivering if they expect to make a run at even making the NIT.
