Sports fans today are used to seeing their favorite stars all over television doing things other than the sport that they play. Peyton Manning's comical commercials, Shaq making movies and cameo appearances in film and television from a countless amount of sports personalities. There's one man we can thank for this, the one and only, "Broadway Joe".
HBO Sport's newest sports documentary installment follows the life and legacy of 1960's New York Jets icon Joe Namath. Up to that time is sports, the players primarily stayed on the field. Namath brought a new dynamic to professional football. He brought showtime.
Being a young guy that was not fortunate enough to see Namath play on the field, this documentary showed me a side of Joe Namath that I had never seen before. So often we think of Joe and remember that classic line before the Jets-Colts Super Bowl game.
"We're going to win, I guarantee it."
The media tends to paint Joe in a cocky light. A brash young man that spoke before thinking and only cared about the limelight. This couldn't be further from the truth. Joe Namath came from a small-town, humble background and wanted nothing more than to consistently advance his game and elevate those around him. This was a side of the Joe Namath story to which I had never been introduced.
I refuse to put spoilers in the review of a film that I recommend every football fan to watch. Seeing the story of Joe Namath for an NFL fan is like an American history enthusiast watching a film about Abraham Lincoln. To truely appreciate the game that you love, you have to learn the stories of those that shaped history and brought football into the modern age.
The Emmy®-winning combination of HBO Sports and NFL Films will explore the fascinating life and career of one of pro football’s biggest stars in a documentary on New York Jets icon Joe Namath, it was announced by Rick Bernstein, executive producer, HBO Sports. NAMATH debuts SATURDAY, JAN. 28 (9:00-10:30 p.m. ET/PT), exclusively on HBO.
