Chargers Snap Six Game Skid

San Diego tops Jacksonville to remain in playoff hunt.

What do you think is the odder fact, that the San Diego Chargers (once regular season giants) lost six straight games or that despite losing six straight games, San Diego still finds itself within the playoff picture in the head-scratching AFC West? I can't say which is stranger but there is one thing that can be said for certain, with a 38-14 beatdown of the Jacksonville Jaguars on Monday night, at least they are heading back in the right direction.

The Chargers, perhaps the NFL's biggest story in a non-positive way, finally looked like the team everyone expected them to be as they scored on five of their first six drives behind the fluid play of Phillip Rivers. They easily sent the hapless Jaguars and their fans home with a disappointing loss on a big Monday night stage,

"That's the type of chemistry coming into this season we knew we had," tight end Antonio Gates said. "We stayed on course despite what we've been through these last six weeks. That we were able to get a win tonight speaks volumes for this team."

The most impressive improvement for the Chargers on Monday night came from quarterback Phillip Rivers. Rivers, who has been wildly inconsistent this season (and that's putting it mildly). He had his cleanest outing of the season, tossing for 294 yards and three touchdowns with no turnovers for an solid QB rating of 146.1.

"It's been a rough six weeks," Rivers said. "I haven't put a complete game together, but I don't care about the numbers. I just want to win."

With the win, the 5-7 Chargers keep their faint playoff hopes alive. They trail both Denver and Oakland by two games with four left to play in the season. If they are to have any hope, then they will need to win out their remaining schedule and pray for losses by both teams ahead of them.

The Chargers close the season against Buffalo, Baltimore, Detroit and Oakland.
