‘Star Trek 2’ in 3D on May 17, 2013!

And guess who's coming back...?

Well, it took 'em long enough.

After years of speculation, and occasionally actual news, Star Trek 2 has been confirmed. It's got a release date and everything: May 17th, 2013. That's before Memorial Day weekend, so although it's obviously a date reserved for a major tentpole release, it's going to have some serious competition coming up the week after in the form of The Fast and the Furious 6, or as we usually like to call it… 6 Fast 6 Furious.

And we still know f**k all about it. Well, almost f**k all. At the red carpet for the DVD/Blu-Ray premiere of J.J. Abram's most recent film, Super 8, Michael Giacchino confirmed to Coming Soon that "I'll be there just as soon as they finish it." Huh. That's key information that he didn't dish out in our recent, in-depth interview with the Oscar-winning composer. Our self-esteem is ruined. Thanks Michael.

Another point of interest, Deadline has confirmed that Star Trek 2 will be filmed in 3D, making it the first J.J. Abrams film to do so. If you thought his lens flares were "in your face" before, you're about to enter a whole new world. Of lens flares.

Still no word on a possible Ke$ha cameo. We have our fingers crossed though.

CraveOnline will be back with more Star Trek 2 news as soon as we find out who Benicio Del Toro is playing. Come on, Harcourt Fenton Mudd…!
