‘The Dark Knight Rises’ Plot Details! It’s Set in the FUTURE!

Just not very far in the future. Christopher Nolan finally starts talking plot and the origin of Bane.

2016. That's when The Dark Knight Rises takes place. More or less. Like Atlas Shrugged: Part One before it – uh… actually, let's go with Neon Genesis: Evangelion instead – Christopher Nolan's third, and reportedly final Batman movie takes place in 2016.

More or less. EmpireOnline has posted an exciting preview of their exclusive Dark Knight Rises issue (out later this week), in which Christopher Nolan reveals the following: "It's really all about finishing Batman and Bruce Wayne's story. We left him in a very precarious place. Perhaps surprisingly for some people, our story picks up quite a bit later, eight years after 'The Dark Knight.' So he's an older Bruce Wayne; he's not in a great state."

The Dark Knight came out in 2008 and was pretty clearly set in the present day, or at least the very near future, meaning The Dark Knight Rises is at least set in 2016. "Older Bruce?" "Not in a great state?" Did Nolan just make The Dark Knight Returns without telling us?

If so, he's screwing with the plot, because The Dark Knight Rises is all about Bane, whom Nolan describes as "a challenge [Batman] hasn't had before," who will test Batman "both physically as well as mentally." Let's hope Nolan has improved his one-on-one fight choreography since the somewhat choppy editing of  Batman Begins.

As for Bane, in addition to Tom Hardy's take on the character (read the article for more details), there's a great quote from costume designer Lindy Hemming on his new look: "He was injured early in his story. He's suffering from pain and needs gas to survive. He can't survive the pain without the mask. The pipes from the mask go back along his jawline and feed into the thing at his back, where there are two cannisters."

That's a somewhat different take on Bane, who previously needed cannisters on his back to make him superstrong, not keep him from being a super wuss. We can all imagine how that big fight sequence is going to end. Batarang + Cannisters = Anticlimax? Let's hope not.

CraveOnline will return with more Dark Knight Rises news in 2016, or when more comes up. Whichever comes first.
