After nearly two decades as a film actor, Paul Bettany is coming to American television.

According to Deadline, Bettany has signed on to star in "Masters of Sex," a drama pilot for Showtime. The project is primarily based on the book "Masters of Sex: The Life and Times of William Masters and Virginia Johnson, the Couple Who Taught America How to Love" by Thomas Maier.

Bettany will portray William H. Masters, who along with his wife and partner, Virginia Johnson pioneered research into human sexuality with their studies beginning in the late '50s. The proposed series is said to follow Masters and Johnson during the '60s as their research helps kick off the "sexual revolution."

American audiences may know Bettany best from his roles in "A Knight's Tale," "A Beautiful Mind," "The Da Vinci Code," "Master and Commander," "Legion" and "Priest." Bettany also provides the voice of J.A.R.V.I.S. in the "Iron Man" movies as well as the upcoming superhero movie, "The Avengers."

"Masters of Sex" is being adapted by screenwriter Michelle Ashford and John Madden as the director of the pilot. Ashford is also executive producing the project alongside Sarah Timberman, Carl Beverly and Judith Verno in association with Sony Pictures TV.
