Sony held a press conference for the 23rd James Bond movie this morning, where they officially announced that the film will be called, as predicted, Skyfall. Daniel Craig and Judi Dench will return to their respective roles, while new rumored new cast members Javier Bardem, Albert Finney, M. Ben Whishaw and Naomie Harris have finally been confirmed. After all the rumor mongering, it's most interesting to point out the news we hadn't predicted: Naomie Harris will not, apparently, be playing Moneypenny, and will instead play a field agent named "Eve."
Also, she will be joined by a second, heretofore unmentioned Bond Girl, "Severin," played by French actress and model Berenice Marlohe. If you check her IMDb page, you'll see that it's already been updated to read, "French actress and model Bérénice Marlohe first came to international attention when she was cast as the 'Bond Girl' alongside Daniel Craig in Skyfall." Yes, we remember when that first happened, oh so long ago. This morning.
Entertainment Weekly had an official announcement, which included the news that Skyfall "is its own story. It doesn't connect with the last two movies." So much for the mysterious organization known as Quantum, apparently. Empire Magazine also tweeted live from the press conference, offering up some choice tidbits of their own. A sampling:
"Bond's journey takes him to Shanghai, Istanbul and to Scotland. Purvis and Wade and John Logan have written a fantastic script." – Mendes
Judi Dench: "I don't think I'll get a grip on who M is, or who anyone is who works in my office, either."
[They] they don't have anyone in mind for the theme song just yet.
Mendes has been put on the spot about directing another Bond movie. "If in six months I'm as excited as I am now, then yes."
What does Skyfall mean?, asks one intrepid journalist. Broccoli: "It has emotional context which will be revealed in the film."
Mendes says that the names of Fiennes, Finney and Whishaw's characters are withheld because Bond fans might know them. Or they might not.
Exciting stuff, no? Come on, Blofeld…
CraveOnline will be back with more Skyfall news as soon as we stop confusing it with Drop Zone and Terminal Velocity.
