It’s officially Gears of War 3 day, me thinks. Reviews, features, videos, news and general stroking about the franchise makes up roughly 80% of the Internet today, with cat videos taking a day off at only 20%. But with the official release of Gears of War 3 today comes some awesome news for fans of post-launch DLC. While speaking with The Telegraph, Epic Games’ design director Cliff Bleszinski revealed that Gears 3 will see story-driven DLC down the road.
“We have some DLC that’s coming up. We’ve confirmed we’ll be doing campaign DLC,” announced Bleszinski. “One thing I can tell you is that you’re not going to see Marcus or Dom or Cole in it. I believe that DLC should be unique and cool, like Lost and the Damned, Gay Tony, Mad Moxie’s Underdome Riot. All those kind of things. DLC’s the place where you play and have fun. So that’s one thing that’s an indication of where things may be going in the future.”
Without spoiling the campaign of Gears of War 3, this is definitely a smart move to focus on a different area of the Gears universe with future story downloadable content. When it comes to Marcus, Dom, Cole and Baird, Gears of War 3 is the definitive end to their story-arc. And that’s just part of the reason why the game is so solid. A definitive ending in gaming is a rare beast, but one we happily welcome in an instance like this. It’s a good idea on Epic’s part not to sully it.
Unfortunately, no time frame was given for the release of story-driven DLC. But then again, the game just came out today. So go, finish the fight (for real), and then we’ll harp Epic about more content later.
