No Rest for the Nerdy – Vol. 35

Slaying zombies in Dead Island to kill time before Gears 3 hits shelves.

We never stop playing video games. That’s a fact. Even after we call it quits for the week we still look forward to getting home and continuing our digital conquests. It’s our life blood. So we thought it would be fun to share with everyone what our gaming intentions are for the weekend so you guys can get a sense of what we're playing and enjoying on a weekly, non-formal basis. Yes, this concept isn't new to the internet. But hey, we kind of want to join in on the fun. Can you blame us for that? So without further ado, here’s what we’re playing this weekend that will forfeit any semblance of rest…

Please feel free to sound off below to let us know what your gaming plans are this weekend.

joeyJoey Davidson: Minecraft 1.8 has officially become one of the laggiest games I’ve played on my computer since… ever. I don’t know what it is about the update, perhaps the new lighting system, but it absolutely destroys my system’s resources.

So, while waiting for Mojang to set that straight, I’ve got a ton of games in front of me to work through. I just received NHL 12 and will be working on my review over the weekend. I’ve also got Space Marine, Dead Island and Renegade Ops on my docket to boot.

Yep, that’s a crap load of action. I recently wrote a piece about Dead Island’s multiplayer woes (When Good Games are Struck Down by Server Struggles). That still remains unresolved. The problem is that I wanted to play the game as a cooperative experience. Instead, it’s going back on the shelf so that I can finish Space Marine and start this year’s NHL season. NHL 12, so far, feels like NHL 11.5. God, I hope that doesn’t remain true throughout.

Alex Keen: What up! I’ve finally got a ton of stuff to play and I am super stoked.  For review at another publication I am playing Gears of War 3.  I have not progressed as far as Erik, but I’m ecstatic so far.  The game plays exactly like I’d hoped and the story is way better than Gears 2.  Epic Games really pulled out everything to make this game top notch.  Hopefully, Erik will have time for some co-op or multiplayer this weekend.

In other news, I picked up a Kinect and was provided a code to play Child of Eden.  I’ve only spent about 10 minutes with this game and I’m extremely confused about what is happening.  But, with all of the positive buzz for this title I am glad to give it a fair amount of time to impress me.  I’ve also been playing Kinect Adventures which has had the best user interface of all the Kinect games I’ve played so far.  It provides silly fun and great exercise.

Beyond that, I might pick up Bulletstorm… but I think that’ll need a rest for some time.

erikErik Norris: I’m chomping at the bit to go back through Gears of Wars 3’s campaign with a few buddies. I always find myself playing through the campaigns of Gears titles multiple times, and Gears 3 will be no different. At some point this weekend I’m going to take up Alex on his offer and hop into co-op with him while I wait for Gears 3 to drop on the rest of the world early next week. There will also be some intense multiplayer action going on, I can promise that.

I’m also patiently waiting for Deep Silver and Techand to get their shit together and get Dead Island working online for more than two players at a time. Joey already outlined our woes with trying to play cooperatively online, so I would waste time going over them again. Suffice it to say, I bought the game this past Tuesday and still haven’t been able to play it as advertised. It’s a depressing thought, for sure.

Finally, I’m planning to pick up NHL 12 this weekend just to spite Joey. He doesn’t have faith that I’ll take the plunge to once again revive our online hockey team, The Grimace. He’s dead wrong, and I intend to prove it.

Oh, and in non-gaming-related news, Star Wars on Blu-ray. I think a marathon is in order…

paulPaul Tamburro: This weekend I will be clearing up some space on my puny Xbox 360 hard drive in order to download the FIFA 12 demo, which will more than likely be unrecognisable from FIFA 11 but as I’m a filthy consumerist I’ll go ahead and buy it anyway. I’ve heard that this year the big sells are “Precision Dribbling” and “Tactical Defending”, which roughly translate to “Our Marketing Staff Are Overpaid” and “Give Us Your Money”.

While I impatiently await taking on the Horde in Gears of War 3 next week, I’ll nurse my Sunday hangover with a return trip to Banoi, and armed with nothing but a bottle of Mountain Dew and an electrified machete I’ll attempt to put an end to this zombie apocalypse once and for all.

At the time of writing I am level 26, but as my progress in the story has been hindered by me going back and replaying it with lower-level friends in co-op, I’m about 2 hours into the main quest and currently facing a dull section where I’m repeatedly forced to enter/exit the sewage system. Still, no one said the zomb-ocalypse wasn’t going to be without its trials and tribulations.
