Like a kid on Christmas morning, I gleefully leapt out of bed knowing today was the day real football begins. Week 1 of the NFL season officially begins tonight when the Green Bay Packers begin their Super Bowl title defense by hosting the New Orleans Saints in what is sure to be a rocking, gun-slinging affair.
The Packers return 6 players that were lost a season ago to injury, two of which being running back Ryan Grant and Tight end Jermichael Finley, both key parts of this offense. The Pack won't be sneaking up on teams this season and with Aaron Rodgers being the trendy "best QB in the game" due to his last season performance, there is a heaping pile of pressure on this young Green Bay team.
The Saints, for their part, are wanting to return to their winning ways that saw them capture the Super Bowl just a couple of seasons ago. They have tweaked up their offense a bit, most noticeably their running game, which was an area of weakness last season. They swapped Reggie Bush (who went to Miami) for former San Diego RB Darren Sproles and drafted Mark Ingram to be the power they lacked in recent seasons.
The Key to this game is the secondary of both teams. Both Green Bay and the Saints rely on their passing game to set up their run and the team that can do that they best will have the advantage in this contest.
Any way you look at it, however, football is BACK and it's time to go back to ignoring wives and significant others across the land. Also, don't forget to lock in any fantasy football players you may have going tonight!
Prediction: New Orleans outlasts an error prone Green Bay squad and escapes with the win. 31-27
