UPDATE: This is real. They are being made in limited quantities – 1,500 total – and will be auctioned off on eBay Fashion Vault starting September 8th at 8:30pm through September 18th. 150 pairs per day. All proceeds will go to The Michael J. Fox Foundation. Get your wallets out, folks…

There are lots of cool things in the far-flung future of Back to the Future Part II. Yes, in the distant year of 2015 robot attendants will refuel your flying car at your local Texaco station. You can ride your hoverboard while reading a newspaper printed on dust-proof paper. And yes, your shoes will lace themselves. Since 2015 is now just a scant two years away (and some change), we can honestly say that none of those things will probably really exist in time for Back to the Future Part II to be accurate, except one… and it's not the newspaper.

Yesterday Nike seems to have made an extremely unexpected announcement that they are producing the long-awaited Nike MAG shoes, based on the design from Back to the Future Part II. Slash Film covered the development from start-to-finish, which was at first only a vague announcement of something Back to the Future-related, but ending up being this:

So when was the last time you got so excited about a marketing tie-in that you squealed in glee? Because for us, it was when we found out about this.

Nike is holding an exclusive event this evening, in which they are expected to unveil the shoes. (We'll update afterwards.) Nike reportedly patented the self-lacing technology last year, so this seems like a done deal.

CraveOnline will be back with more Nike MAG news after we see some serious s**t.
