Back in April, Victor Ortiz spoiled Floyd Mayweather's return plans by defeating Andre Berto in a possible "Fight Of The Year" battle. You see , Mayweather hasn't fought since he schooled Shane Mosley almost 2 years ago and his plan involved using Andre Berto to setup his comeback. Ortiz won the unanimous decision which made him the new target in the Mayweather sweepstakes. The 27-year-old Andre Berto (27-,1 21KO) was looking to shake off the cobwebs and get back on track when he took on the 35-year-old IBF Welterweight champ Jan Zaveck (31-1, 18KO) on HBO's BAD.
Berto came in looking like a man on a mission armed with new found aggression when the opening bell sounded. Berto pushed forward behind a jab followed up by a flurry that had Zaveck against the ropes. Zaveck responded with a looping right that glanced Berto's temple. Berto landed a beautiful combo to the body as Zaveck shelled up. Zaveck doesn't have nearly the same hand speed as his opponent but he seemed to be just as game as Berto. Berto landed a quick straight right that snapped Zaveck's head back. Both men continued to trade towards the end of the round which saw Berto rip another hard combo to the body.
The second started with Berto aggressively targeting his opponent's body once again. Berto landing flashy combo's while Zaveck blocked most of the shots. Both men went toe-to-toe against the ropes which saw Zaveck land a big left hook as Berto responded with another body-head combo. Zaveck shot a straight right that caught Berto's attention. Both fighters fought in a phone booth , landing uppercuts and hooks. The third round saw Berto control the action with his speed until Zaveck came back strong with looping rights.
The fourth round saw Zaveck picking off most of Berto's flashy flurries while he continued to land hard counters. Zaveck pushed Berto against the ropes with body shots until Berto turned the tables with an uppercut. Zaveck landed a left and a looping right once again followed by a 2 punch combo to the head. Towards the end of the round Berto landed a quick uppercut , body combo as both men walked back to their corners.
Round five began with Berto pushing Zaveck to the ropes while Zaveck landed a gorgeous overhand right that momentarily stunned his opponent. The phone booth fight continued with both men landing uppercuts. Berto ripped another shot to the body before they both clinched. Zaveck landed a nice right hand with his back against the ropes as Berto continued to work the inside game. This fight was becoming a war. Berto showed swelling under his left eye while Zaveck had a horrible cut over his right eye that was accompanied by swelling. Zaveck's corner took a good look at their fighters eye and called the fight. They didn't want their fighter to take anymore punishment as Zaveck said he couldn't see but wanted to continue.
With an impressive performance Andre Berto proved he is still a powerful force in the 147lb weight class. Berto says he hopes that Ortiz defeats Mayweather on September 17th so he can get a rematch with the man that defeated him back in April.
Make no mistake, Berto is a world-class fighter. I look forward to seeing what's next for the young champion.
