Sony Online Entertainment’s superhero MMO action game, DC Universe Online, will be getting its very first substantial expansion pack later this summer. The add-on will bring the extensive ring slingin’ mythos of the Green Lantern Corps to the forefront of title with the “Fight for the Light” pack.
Players will be able to adopt emotion-based powers (good guys get Green Lantern willpower, while villains get Sinestro Corps’ fear power), as well as partake in four Lantern-specific missions, three of which are made for four-player groups.
Unfortunately, players will not become fully-fledged members of the Green Lantern Corps or Sinestro Corps. You’ll merely be a recruit, meaning you won’t have a sweet Lantern logo to display proudly on the front of your costume, nor will you be able to use ring constructs as your primary weapon (they supplement or enhance only).
Sony has sent out descriptions for three of the four new missions, which take place in S.T.A.R. Labs, Coast City and Oa. Here’s the setup for each:
S.T.A.R. Labs Four-Person Alert
"Deep within S.T.A.R Labs, Brainiac seeks to control experimental devices that will allow him to harness the power source behind the Lantern Corps' rings. This attack throws the Lantern Corps into chaos, and players must join a fragile truce between the Green and Yellow Lantern Corps to bring the powerful devices back under S.T.A.R Labs control."
Coast City Four-Person Alert
"Players must battle their way through the 'City Without Fear' to Ferris Aircraft, the home of fighter ace Hal Jordan. Here they face the unbridled rage of the Red Lantern Corps in a showdown to save the city and the Universe."
Sciencells Prison Four-Person Alert
"On the Green Lantern Corps' home planet Oa, heroes will join up with Guy Gardner to stop a prison break that threatens to release the most feared prisoners of the Green Lantern Corps. Villains will fight alongside Sinestro as he attempts to release the Green Lantern Corps' greatest foes and retrieve the evil Lyssa Drak from her emerald powered prison cell."
I know this will come as a blow to some, but the “Fight for the Light” expansion will not be free. The add-on will cost users $9.99 on both PS3 and PC. So if you were getting used to DCU Online’s free updates, you better check those expectations here.
Finally, Sony has provided a promotional poster for “Fight for the Light,” as well as some preliminary screenshots.
