Adam Ferrara, Tanner Foust, and Rutledge Wood are back for a second season of Top Gear US. With that in mind we decided to look back the challenge segments from Season 1. In the show, the guys are challenged to prove various automotive concepts in some spectacular ways.
Check out our Top Gear Top 10 Challenges – A look at the best of the ‘Top Gear Challenges’ segment of the Top Gear TV series.
Cobra Attack – Tanner takes the 2010 Dodge Viper out for a spin shortly after Rutlidge arrives along with a Bell "Huey" Cobra Helicopter and crew. The challenge was a chase between the Dodge Viper (top speed 202 mph) and the Bell Cobra (top speed 172 mph), from an airfield in Griffin Georgia to a railroad bridge 10 miles away and back.
Car vs. Plane – Tanner and Rutlidge try to find out if it is faster to drive or fly when the destination is less than 500 miles. In this challenge the guys travel by car and plane from Hollywood, California to a bar at the Bellagio hotel in Las Vegas, Nevada. The pair faced off in in a V8 Ferrari California and a Southwest flight to Vegas.
Beater Boot Camp – Adam, Tanner and Rutlidge each find a vintage budget GM car that they think should be put back in to production. Adam picks a Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme. Tanner goes all 80's on us and picks the Pontiac Fiero. Rutledge goes in a very different direction with the Buick Roadmaster station wagon.
Blind Drift – Tanner takes on two extreme pro skiers in a Mitsubishi Evo. The challenge has Tanner racing a curvy 7 mile course on snow, pavement and gravel to the bottom of the mountain (at Little Eagle Lodge in Mammoth, CA) in the Evo, while the skiers take a gondola to the top of the mountain before racing down 3,000 vertical ft. down the same mountain.
Flying Coupe DeVille – This Top Gear challenge looks at the roots of NASCAR, specifically Moonshine running. The three hosts each picked up a car for $1,000 and met in North Wilkesboro, North Carolina where they would figure which car was the best deal. Rutlidge picked up a 1987 Ford Thunderbird Turbo Coupe, while Adam bought a 1976 Cadillac Coupe DeVille, and Tanner rolled up in a 1987 Nissan 300zx.
HALO vs. Velociraptor – In a spectacular display, the Top Gear challenge has Tanner in a Ford F-150 Raptor going up against a military HALO (High Altitude Low Opening) parachutist. The Raptor turns out to be a real beast off road as it drives over five miles of asphalt, rough trail and open desert, while the HALO jumper will try to make the same distance, by from 25,000 feet in the air.
Fast in Florida – This challenge features an insane 160 mile land, sea and air race traveling from Miami to Key West, Florida. Tanner would go by air in a Cessna seaplane, Rutledge goes with a 38 ft. Donzi Speedboat and Adam takes the sporty compact, Lotus Evora.
Blind Drift #2 – The Blind Drift episode had two different awesome challenges, the second of the two being just as good as the first. In this challenge Tanner (who also is a three-time X Games gold medalist and two-time Formula Drift champion) has to teach blind comedian Brian Fischler how to drive.
America's Toughest Trucks – Top Gear heads to Alaska to find the toughest trucks. The challenge consisted of the guys buying a truck for around $3,000 with at least 150,000 miles on it. The trucks in the challenge were a 1997 Dodge Ram driven by Rutlidge, Tanner goes with a 1983 Chevy CK Stepside and Adam picks a 1976 Ford F-250.
Used Car Salesmen – The guys take a turn at retail and become used car salesmen. The guys each bought a car for $3,000 and tried to sell it for a profit. The location for this challenge was Glendale, California's Brand Blvd, where there are a whopping 60 dealerships spread out across just 10 blocks.
