With the Wii U seemingly a year away from release, you would think that the next generation of consoles is right around the corner. However, Sony and Microsoft have openly expressed that they want the PS3 and Xbox 360, respectively, to last for 10 years, which puts us at roughly the halfway point. Publisher Ubisoft is not too pleased with that; they’re ready to move on to the next generation of systems because the current line-up of consoles restrict their ambitions.
"Our challenge with the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 is that we're extremely limited in what we can do,” explained Jacquier. “It's a challenge for the engineers to provide nice graphics and nice AI and nice sound with a very small amount of memory and computation time.”
Jacquier’s hope is that the next generation of consoles won’t have these limitations. Specifically, with beefed up processing power and memory, developers can focus more energy on making enemy A.I. more challenging and believable, an area of game development that Jacquier feels is “the real battleground.”
"We think that the next generation of consoles won't have these limits any more," expressed Jacquier. "Games might have more realistic graphics and more on-screen, but what's the value of making something more realistic and better animated if you have poor AI?"
Jacquier has a point. A game can look and control beautifully, but if the A.I. is dumb as a rock, the gameplay can oftentimes be a complete drag. While I love the Assassin’s Creed franchise (as many of you do), there’s no denying that the enemy A.I. is pretty damn awful. Why do all of Ezio’s enemies still just standing around in a circle watching me butcher their comrades?
But when push comes to shove, it seems like we’re still a ways off from Jacquier’s dream of seeing new systems. So Ubisoft might want to research some workarounds for their wonky A.I. for the time being.
