MLB All Stars

The line-ups for this years MLB All-Star game were announced Sunday and, like every year, there were a few surprises to be had. Most notable in the surprise area was that the Milwaukee Brewers had three players selected by the fans to start; Outfielder Ryan Braun, first baseman Prince Fielder and second baseman Rickie Weeks. The trio of Brewers represents the first time a smaller-market team has had 3 starters in the All Star game and is a testament to the season Milwaukee is having so far this year. They are currently atop the NL Central.

"It means the Milwaikee Brewers have arrived on the national scene," Braun, the top NL vote-getter, said Sunday before the Central co-leaders visited Minnesota.

Over in the American League, the Yankees, arguably MLB's most popular team, are sending 6 players to the July 12th game in Phoenix, but not without some controversy. 37 year old Derek Jeter was again elected to the team despite a less than all-star year and a stint on the disabled list. His addition to the team again brings to light the biggest glaring hole in baseballs all-star game, that popularity accounts for more than skill to some degree.

"Seems like the Yankees always take care of all the All-Star voting every year, so it's just disappointing to not see more Red Sox on that team," Boston ace Jon Lester said.
