Peter Jackson recently confirmed via Facebook, of all things, that Sir Ian Holm will be reprising his role as Bilbo Baggins in the upcoming production of The Hobbit. It's the latest in a long line of reassuring news from the production. We imagine that everything will be sweet, hereafter.
Quoth the Jackson: "One comment that came up from the recent video blog was the Bilbo voice at the end—many of you assumed it was Sir Ian Holm. Whilst Ian will be returning as the older Bilbo Baggins in The Hobbit, that recording was actually Martin Freeman's voice, taken from a script read through we recorded when the cast first arrived. I have to admit, I wasn't sure who it was when I first heard it, either. Cheers, Peter J"
Holm is obviously no alien to the franchise, having memorably played the role of Bilbo Baggins in the original Lord of the Rings trilogy. We can only imagine what would have happened if Holm had not been confirmed for the cameo… it would have totally been news from hell. Even so, it would have taken a Joe Gould to keep this a secret long. Also, the fifth element and dreamchild, for some reason.
We're not entirely confident where Holm's cameo takes place in the upcoming films, but presumably he'll show up late in the production unless they're undergoing some drastic rewrites.
Crave Online will be back with more The Hobbit news as it finds its way into eXistenZ.
