Fans of the VW Beetle (aka the "VW Bug") were finally able to get their first look at the redesigned 2012 VW Beetle this week. The much anticipated redesign was launched worldwide starting in Shanghai, China, then to Berlin and finally in New York City just in time for the New York International Auto Show.
The VW Beetle has not been redesigned since the initial relaunch (outside of several special editions) of the car in 1998, and fans have been waiting to get a look at the new car since Volkswagen's announcement in May of 2010 that there would be an all new Beetle.
Nicknamed the 21st century Beetle, the new Bug manages to retain it's classic look while creating a lower profile, and slightly more aggressive look. The rounded edges of the car are less emphasized (see the 2010 Beetle below for comparison), the car appears to sit lower to the ground, and the windows and roof are now more slanted than before. The head and tail lights are also more oval and less circular than in the previous model.
We like the new styling of the car and think that guys might start to reconsider the Bug as a car for them. Prices have not been announced but VW is hinting that it will be priced lower than the $20,000 Mini Cooper.
