Get ready to return to Third Earth
During last weekend's WonderCon, Warner Bros. Animation unveiled a stunning trailer for its upcoming reimagining of the classic '80s animated series, "ThunderCats."
As in the original show, the series follows Lion-O, the rightful ruler of the kingdom of Thundera and his companions Tygra, Cheetara, Panthro in addition to WilyKit, WilyKat and Lion-O's pet, Snarf as they take on the malevolent sorcerer Mumm-Ra and a legion of Mutant warriors. The animation for the series is being produced by Studio4°C, a Japanese animation studio that previously worked on "The Animatrix" and "Batman: Gotham Knight."
Our sister site, ComingSoon.net featured a report from the "ThunderCats" panel with producers Michael Jelenic and Ethan Spaulding, Art Director Dan Norton and Larry Kenney, the original voice of Lion-O who will portray Lion-O's father, Claudius in the new incarnation.
After screening the trailer, the panel announced that 26 episodes have been ordered, with potential storylines laid out for 26 additional episodes if the series finds a warm reception from the Cartoon Network audience. Veteran actors Clancy Brown and Robin Atkins Downes were also revealed to have joined the cast as Grune and Mumm-Ra, respectively.
It was also confirmed that the action would take place entirely on Third Earth, simplifying the mythology of the original series. And in an intriguing aside, Jelenic hinted that a revival of the "Siverhawks" may also be in the pipeline.
The new "ThunderCats" debuts on Cartoon Network in July.
