Episode Title: "Swiss Miss"
Writer: Adam Reed
The International Secret Intelligence Service (or ISIS) is back in business for the first episode of "Archer’s" second season. And I’m happy to report that the show is still one of the most hilarious comedies on television, animated or otherwise.
In tonight’s premiere, Sterling Archer (H. Jon Benjamin) and his reluctant partner (and ex-girlfriend) Lana Kane (Aisha Tyler) travel to Gstaad, Switzerland to protect Anka, the daughter of Conrad Schlotz (George Coe). Unfortunately for Archer, Anka is an underage girl who constantly tricks him into compromising positions that make him look like a statutory rapist in front of his fellow agents and Scholtz.
The ironic thing is that Archer is a complete gentleman towards Anka… Well, as much of a gentleman as he can manage. When the girl is exposed to severe frostbite, he tells her that it’s too bad she doesn’t have any thick gloves like his rather than offer them to her. He also has a heart-to-heart discussion with Anka in the middle of a high speed chase sequence that makes it seems like Archer has finally become aware of his own shortcomings as a human being. But don’t worry fans, it was just a false alarm. Our Archer is still the raging a**hole we’ve grown to love.
This episode is actually ambitious in its staging of the climactic action scene, which is one of the show’s more impressive sequences to date. Archer himself gets to remind us that he may really be the best secret agent in world, after taking out almost all the terrorists attacking Anka while mostly unarmed. But then if he wasn’t any good at his job, his personality probably wouldn’t make him easy to watch.
As for the rest of the cast, we learn that our beloved loser, Cyril Figgis (Chris Parnell) had a stint in the mental hospital between seasons after his breakup with Lana. And although he was sidelined for most of this episode, his brief appearance was very amusing. The main subplot this week revolved around Mallory Archer’s (Jessica Walter) attempt to seduce Conrad and get him to invest in ISIS. But she’s beaten to the punch by one of her own employees and reluctantly joins them in a three-way over a new drink, called a Green Russian.
Even Adam Reed’s Agent Ray Gillette gets some time in the spotlight, as Archer dresses him down for losing in the downhill Olympics. It’s just a fun aside that reminds us what a jerk Archer can be and gives Ray something to regret.
This was a fantastic way to kick off the new season and you should absolutely check it out tonight at 10PM on FX. If you don’t mind spoiling some of the best jokes, here are the Top 5 Archer Quotes of the Week:
5: Archer: "Thanks Bitch and Sundance."
