Here’s a novelty: a remake we actually want to see. Hollywood Reporter has revealed that the classic 1966 heist comedy Gambit is the latest film to be updated for contemporary audiences, with Oscar winners Joel and Ethan Coen (Fargo, No Country for Old Men) writing the script and excellent director Michael Hoffman (The Last Station, Restoration) directing. Gambit would be the third remake The Coen Bros. have written, after The Ladykillers and True Grit, and only the second that the brothers have written together but not directed, after Sam Raimi’s strange and all-but-forgotten 1985 comedy Crimewave

Cameron Diaz and Colin Firth have both signed on to play the lead roles in the heist comedy, in which Firth’s character tries to con a wealthy art collector out of a prized masterpiece using Diaz as a patsy. Diaz plays a steer roper with more surprises than Firth can handle, and his plan quickly goes horribly, hilariously awry. An early draft of the Coens’ screenplay was one of the funniest things we’ve ever read, so we really hope this pans out.

The original Gambit is no slouch either, featuring some wonderful performances from future Oscar-winners Michael Caine and Shirley MacLaine and a twisty-turny plotline that’s still as fresh as they come. Gambit isn’t readily available on DVD, but it can be found online as an Amazon exclusive. It’s highly, highly recommended.
