Do you remember in Dracula, how Jonathan Harker was a Scotland Yard detective hunting down Vlad the Impaler? No? Funny, that’s how Warner Bros. is telling it these days. The Dubba-Dubba-WB is closing a deal to to acquire Harker, a reimagining of Bram Stoker’s classic vampire tale that transforms the cuckolded bookkeeper into a badass vampire fighting mofo. Oh bloody hell… Wasn’t Van Helsing good enough for Hollywood?
Oh wait, I guess not. Moving on…
Harker will be produced by Leonardo DiCaprio’s production company Appian Way, although he currently has no plans to star. Jaume Collet-Serra is attached to direct, having already made the actually-better-than-you-think-it-is-even-though-you-can-guess-the-ending-from-the-trailer-but-seriously-this-is-one-f***ed-up-movie The Orphan. He also directed House of Wax, but nobody’s perfect. Deadline had the scoop.
Dracula’s been ‘reimagined’ more times than possibly any other pop culture character, from Van Helsing to Dracula 2000 to Monster Squad to Love At First Bite to Shadow of the Vampire to Nosferatu to the other Nosferatu to Dracula: Dead and Loving It to Buffy the Vampire Slayer to Blade Trinity to Scooby Doo and the Reluctant Werewolf to Doctor Who to Andy Warhol’s Dracula to Dracula A.D. 1972 to Billy the Kid vs. Dracula to The Horror of Dracula and so on. We could go on but you get the gist of it. The character survived even the worst of those incarnations, so even if Harker sucks for a change (I mean, usually that’s Dracula’s job) the impact on the character and story’s reputation will be about as significant as spitting into an ocean.
CRAVE Online will herald more news as Harker sings it. Yeah, we went there.
