They didn't air the goods on the broadcast, but a monster has officially awakened in the mainstream.

The competition was a bit of a joke, and the distinction wasn't worthy of the full production broadcast, but nevertheless electronic dance music, aka EDM has quietly entered large-scale legitimacy – as much as MTV can provide, anyway – by awarding Calvin Harris the first-ever electronica award for his "Feel So Close" video (which you can watch below).

Harris won the MTV VMA first-ever EDM award, while also DJing the event at Los Angeles' Staples Center, a detail Spinner didn't miss as they mused (perhaps accurately) that the network may have offered the moonman as payment for his services on Thursday night.

Harris' competition was Duck Sauce's "Big Bad Wolf" as well as Skrillex – "First of the Year (Equinox)," Martin Solveig's "The Night Out" and Avicii's  "Le7els".
