Gorillaz To Write New Music, Enter The Shoe Game

A partnership with Converse leads Gorillaz into a project that specializes in unlikely songwriting collaborations.

Not only are Gorillaz getting into the footwear game, they're putting new material together to commemorate the occasion as well.

Converse announced this week that they're teaming up with international smash patchwork group Gorillaz for a new line of shoes. The band's co-founder Jamie Hewlett designed a series of Gorillaz-themed prints for the Gorillaz Chuck Taylor All Star collection, which Converse plans to ship in February 2012. The shoes are expected to cost roughly $60 and be available in four different styles.

There will be a musical element to the collaboration, too. Converse has also said that Gorillaz will deliver the next new original song in the company's "Three Artists. One Song" collaboration series. Recent participants include the highly unlikely gatherings of Matt & Kim, Soulja Boy, and Andrew W.K. The free track's release will coincide with the launch of the Gorillaz sneakers.

Gorillaz drummer Russel Hobbs explains the band's decision to get involved in the slingin' kicks game: "We've been trading in ideas and conversing with one another for 10 whole years," Hobbs says in a statement. "Plus, I've been wearing my Chuck Taylor's since forever."

The two major entities will be hosting festivities on December 1 at the 100 Club in London, where the Gorillaz Sound System, a Gorillaz-endorsed audio-visual experience will take place. Ticket information for the multimedia experience will be available at Converse's official site.
