Saturday, August 20th is going to be a big night in Alberta – it's XFest at Fort Calgary, the province's most popular music event, and some of the star-studded acts on the line-up includes Jane's Addiction, Weezer, Social Distortion, and House of Pain.
The Rural Alberta Advantage (from Toronto) and Calgary's own Michael Bernard Fitzgerald will also be on the bill. Additional bands and performers will continue to be announced over the course of the coming weeks. Presale for tickets started yesterday and runs until today, May 12 at 10pm (use password "addiction"), and then regular ticket sales will resume at primeboxoffice.com.
“Calgary needs an event like this,” said Dave Johnston, director of marketing for Union Events, who coordinated the XFest in conjunction with Calgary radio station X92.9, to the Calgary Herald. “Granted, there’s Stampede, there’s Sled Island but there hasn’t been anything that fits this… musical range. There is every intention to make this an annual event, like Sonic Boom has become in Edmonton and Sasquatch! (Music Festival in George, Washington) and every other musical summer event that goes on in North America.”
Jane's Addiction, who hail from California, has never played in Calgary or anywhere in Alberta for that matter – their impending visit is causing quite a stir of excitement from music fans. Their new album The Great Escape Artist is scheduled to come out this August and will be their fourth studio album. Meanwhile, Weezer hit everyone's radar back in '94 and have since released nine albums, and according to lead vocalist Rivers Cuomo's Twitter feed, he's working on new material.
