Why wait until March to don green tights and drink your weight in Irish whiskey when you can celebrate Halfway to St. Patrick’s Day next week? On Sept. 17, you’ll be only six short months away from every sophisticated imbiber’s favorite holiday, and we’ve got the drink you’ll need to celebrate properly: Kilbeggan Irish whiskey.
Kilbeggan hits the sweet spot, combining Old World whiskey-making tradition, top quality and affordability. The lads at Kilbeggan have been making the stuff since the 1750s, so they clearly know what they’re doing. and it’ll set you back only about $25 per bottle.
The amber, almondy, citrusy, woodsy whiskey is perfectly suited to sipping neat or with an ice cube (adding ice or water actually brings out more of the peaty aromas in whiskeys), but we suggest adorning it with a few more ingredients and whipping up a Kilbeggan Dubliner. Cranberry juice and cherry syrup crank up the citrusy/fruity components, with an extra bite from vermouth. Check out the recipe below. We think you’ll agree that this is the perfect cocktail to ring in St. Patrick’s Day six months early.
Combine 3 parts Kilbeggan Irish whiskey with 2 parts sweet vermouth, 1.5 parts cherry syrup and 1.5 parts cranberry juice in a shaker with ice. A dash of simple syrup is optional if you want to sweeten it up a touch. Shake and strain into a martini glass, garnishing with a cherry or blackberry.
