Born in Passaic, New Jersey to a Puerto Rican mother and Dominican father, Zoe Yadira Saldana is most known for her role as Uhura in the reboot of "Star Trek" and Neytiri in "Avatar."
Zoe Saldana has two sisters, Cisely and Mariel, who appeared with her in a Gap ad.
Following the sudden death of her father when she was ten years old, Zoe Saldana moved to the Dominican Republic where she practiced ballet. While growing up in the Dominican Republic, Zoe learned to climb mango trees and gut fresh-caught fish. She describes herself as "a feminine tomboy. I had my plastic swords, my ninja stars " but I still wore lipstick" (gq.com). Zoe added, growing up in the Dominican Republic "was beautiful. You could grab your surfboard and run to the beach in 15 minutes" (womenshealthmag.com).
Zoe Saldana speaks both English and Spanish. Zoe returned to New York when she was 17 and joined theatre groups.

Her first appearance on television was an episode of "Law & Order." Her debut in film was the dance movie "Center Stage." Other roles followed, including "Crossroads," "Drumline," "Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl," "The Terminal," "Guess Who" and "Columbiana." In picking parts, Zoe said, "It gets pretty boring when all you are is the support system for a male character. I want to be in the small percentage of women who don't settle for conventional roles."
Aside from acting, Zoe has had editorials in Elle, Vanity Fair, V, GQ Italia, Glamour and Nylon.
Zoe Saldana has said of herself, "I'm more of a guy's girl. I like having a beer in a bar, and I don't bicker or sit down and do my nails. But I have two sisters and a mother, and we're Latin, so we gossip."
Zoe said of aging, "I'm very accepting of my age. It's like notches on your belt: experience, wisdom, a different kind of beauty.but God as my witness, I am going to try to do everything I can to keep this ass together for as long as I possibly can " without going against nature.
Zoe has also directed a web series created by Vin Diesel. "He asked my sister and I to co-direct some of the episodes. We did, and it was raw, and it was awesome" (movieline.com).
Zoe Saldana added, "I hope [people] are inspired to work really hard for what they believe in and to fight for their dreams, to make them possible. I love to work and I'm never afraid of the hardship that work entails because for me work is part of life."
