Torah Jane Bright is an Australian professional snowboarder and Olympic gold medalist.
Torah Bright recently qualified for a spot to compete in the slopestyle, a new event in 2014 Winter Olympics, where competitors perform tricks through a course. She said, “I am thrilled and cannot wait to seize my moments in Sochi.” She added, “More than anything it’s about sharing the sport I love with the world.”
Torah Bright did say, however, on December 31, “If the political position gets any worse I sure as hell won’t be risking my safety just for an Olympic Games.”

She is a three-time world super-pipe champion (2006, 2007 and 2008); three-time Nippon Open winter; three-time winner U.S. Open Champion, and a bunch of others.
Torah Bright was born and raised in Australia, the fourth of five siblings. Her name means “bearer of great message” and she began skiing when she was two. She was snowboarding at 11, and was a professional by the time she turned 14. Her nickname is T-Bone.
Her personal motto is “Live your life with honor, humility, love, laughter and passion always within you.” She is a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She said, “For me, it’s just a way of life – I don’t drink, smoke, drink tea or coffee, or have sex before marriage. I’ve never drunk or smoked but I’ll go out to dance and stay up late.”
Torah Bright was asked to pose naked, like Elena Hight did in the ESPN body issue. She declined. “It’s a personal choice for anybody and I guess for me…I don’t really want to exploit my body in that way. I’m very grateful for everything it does me.”
Torah Bright resides in Salt Lake City, where she trains with her coach and brother Ben Bright at Park City Mountain Resort. She stays in shape with a variety of “dry-land things, just short, intensive kind of circuit weight training, with a little bit more emphasis on upper body now.”
Her dream holiday is a trip to the Maldives; her favorite food is pizza; and she is most scared of the dark. Her hero is Mother Teresa; and the movie she’s seen over and over is “Star Wars.” She said in five years she would hope to be “the best human I know how to be.”
Aside from snowboarding, Torah Bright enjoys surfing, decorating and playing with her nephews and nieces. She has also helped design her own clothing line for Roxy. She married American pro-snowboarder Jack Welch, but they have since divorced.
