Oona Castilla Chaplin is probably best known to American audiences for her role as Talisa in “Game of Thrones.” She wrote on Twitter in 2013 “I love laughing. And seeing other people laugh. And dancing. And food.”
Oona was born in Madrid, but spent half of every year of her childhood in Switzerland, where Charlie Chaplin had settled for tax purposes. She is a mix of Chilean and European ancestry. English is Chaplin’s third language, after Spanish and French. She learned English in New York and speaks with a non-specific Americanized accent.
Growing up, she studied ballet, salsa and flamenco and attended boarding school at Gordonstoun in Scotland. “I made a lot of naughty mistakes when I was there, but it was a beautiful rite of passage and I never got homesick; I’ve always found that if I stay in one place for too long, I need to leave.” She graduated in 2007 from the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts.
Aside from “Game of Thrones,” Oona Chaplin has appeared in “Sherlock,” “The Hour” and “MI-5,” among other projects. She said, “Watching yourself on screen is always a little weird.”

Oona said, “I’m the child of the future…I think that’s the way it should be – being from millions of different places and traveling – it’s the best education. I don’t buy things now, I buy plane tickets. The only thing I want is to make enough money to be able to travel with my children.”
Her great-grandfather was Nobel Prize-winning Eugene O’Neill. Oona was named after her grandmother, the daughter of Eugene.
Fame runs in her family: her grandparent was the uber-famous Charlie Chaplin. “When people say ‘Charlie Chaplin,” I still think now of the guy in the moustache and bowler hat and funny walk – I don’t think of an old man who was my grandfather. I never met him, which probably adds to the confusion. There are moments, even now, when I sort of go ‘Whoa…my blood has some of that in it? It’s amazing, but it kind of freaks me out sometimes” (independent.co.uk).
Oona Chaplin admits to being a clean freak. “I like to put on some uncomfortably loud reggae-Cuban music and get down with my bad self and my hoover.” She is irritated most by people with no imagination; her favorite things are: laughing, running, hugs, the end of a really good film and sunshine.
Oona considers herself a nomad and moves around a lot.
