Gretta Kruesi is a professional kitesurfer, artist and entrepreneur. She’s been a sponsored athlete since 2008 and holds the US kiteboarding distance record at 100 miles.
Gretta Kruesi learned how to kitesurf in 2005 at the beach in front of her parent's house in South Carolina. “I owe many thanks to my former boyfriend and fellow kiter who took the time to both teach and watch out for me.” Her preferred riding style is “strapless surfboard.”
When she first got into the sport, she said, “I quickly realized...kiteboarding alone couldn’t sustain the lifestyle I wanted. It’s too small a sport. Modeling, even painting, provided more income than kiting.” She vowed in 2010 to take kiteboading mainstream herself. We think she succeeded. In 2012, Gretta Kruesi was named one of the world’s 10 most influential female kiteboarders.

Gretta Kruesi said the biggest impact kitesurfing has had on her “are the people I’ve met and the places I’ve traveled to. What other sport in the world takes you to events on Richard Branson’s private island?” But her life isn't all about the water. Her VOG art and wave murals can be found in a variety of cities. She said, “I’ve always loved art, but only recently did the tax man tell me I could no longer count it as a hobby.”
Gretta Kruesi definitely puts fun over money. “You’re young once, live once, so do the things you love. Fun and lazy are not the same thing either. Follow your passions, work hard at them, and money will follow.” She is enrolled in the Art Institute for Fashion Design in order to learn how to make high-end beachwear.
She wrote, “I’m a big believer in doing the things you are passionate about and the things that you love. I used to feel I was spreading myself too thin because I happen to be passionate about a lot of things. For me it’s painting, living a healthy lifestyle, surfing and doing service-driven work. I want to leave this world a better place than when I got here. The one unifying thread for me is the ocean.”
She said fans might not know that she’s obsessed with dancing. “When I first moved to LA I was in music videos for JT, Dr. Dre and Katy Perry to name a few.”
Her dream vacation is “any place with warm water, solid waves and wind.” Her turn-ons are independence, a sense of humor, a touch of chivalry and a laid-back, positive attitude. Her turn-offs are “putting other people down, liars, narrow-mindedness, drugs, coach potatoes and a dirty kitchen.”
Gretta Kruesi is single and currently resides in Venice Beach, California, though she often travels.
